Sambalpur serves as the gateway to the western zone of Orissa. She abounds in lush green forests, colourful widlife, beautiful array of hills, waterfalls, rich tribal life and culture, folk songs and dances. Sambalpur finds mention in the book of Ptolemy (2nd Century A.D.) as Sambalaka on the bank of the river Manada (Presently known as the river Mahanadi) extolled in the scriptures as the holy incarnation of the Goddess Ganges in Kaliyuga. The records of the Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang are a reflection of the flourishing Buddhist University of Parimalgiri (Po-lo-mo-ki-li), which had its campus on the present Gandhamardhan hills of the district.
