INTRODUCTION

Keonjhar, a tribal district, spells its seductive charm from the moment one enters its lush forests. If teh district is rich in flora and fauna, it is richer in its art and culture. Keonjhar is at once a place ofr piligrims and a tourist’s dream-come-true. For starters, there is the Kushaleswar Temple at Deoganon that dates back to 900 AD. For art lovers, there are century-old frescos under a rock shaped like a half-open umbrella, which locals of Sitabinji strongly call Ravan Chhaya or Ravan’s shadow.Surrounded by deep forests and hills, the Sanghagra as well as the Badaghagra waterfalls attracts thousands of tourists from the state as well as outside throughout the year. After feasting your eyes on the beauty of the waterfalls, move on to Gonasika, a pretty spot surrounded by a series of valleys and hills swathed in varying hues of green. Historians say that the holy Baitarani river originated from this spot. Gonasika means the nostrils of a cow.The river, after running underground for some distance comes out over a stone projection resembling the nostril of a cow. Hence, the name. The Khandadhar waterfall is situated amidst lush green forests, where a smokescreen like spray is created as the water plunges to the ground almost 500 feet below. Similarly, the Gundichaghagi is a series of waterfalls near Harichandanpur falling down overhanging rock projections, and is slowly gaining popularity.
